New hearing with cochlear implant (CI)
Assalamualaikum wbt,
Pernah dgr tak ttg cochlear implant??implant tu lebih kurang bermaksud alat tiruan yg dicipta utk carry out same function as organ/bghn badan yg dah rosak…jd dlm kes cochlear implant, kita ada machine yg akan take over the function of the cochlear, bukan amek cochlear org yg dah mati etc…
So, seperti yg dijanjikan sebelum ni, sy akan cerita sket ttg pengalamn mendengar dengan CI ni..sebenarnya artikel ni dibuat bukan directly for blogging porpose, but for winning a money reward given by the CI company (Cochlear) to those CI users who are in tertiary level of education..as part of their charity work. And the winner will act as Cochlear ambassador to inspire other CI users around the world to also excel in their studies..I’ve spent quite a lot of time n effort for this since there is only a winner in each region. And of course la ada sedikit unsur2 riak dan penokok tambahan..hehe.Mula2 tak amek pusing sgt ttg pembahagian region ni sbb rasanya Malaysia is one of the biggest customer for Cochlear(ada lagi model CI lain yg tak berape nak femes kat sini)It was only when I was filling up the application form then I noticed that Malaysia is not included in any of the regions stated..huhu..redha.
Ok, enjoy reading this..dan semoga boleh memberi sedikit manfaat..Kalu rajin kritik2 la part mane yg tak bagus supaya boleh dibaguskan lagi..manalah tau tahun depan boleh apply lak..inshaAllah..
8 years ago, at the age of 15, 1 was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. Since then, my hearing ability decreased from moderate to profound very quickly. To aid my needs, I had to change to a higher amplified hearing aids a few times before I went for cochlear implant (CI) operation December last year. Despite all, of the difficulties I had to endure, I succeeded and passed all my examinations with flying colour. Being chosen as the best student in my school in leaving certificate examination followed by an excellent pointer of 41/45 in International Baccalaureate (IB) examination, I secured a place to study medicine. Hence, here I am in my forth year in University College of Dublin in Ireland.
However, in pursue of my dream of becoming a doctor, I have to overcome my disability in a very challenging manner and hectic life as a medical student. While amplification provided by the previous hearing aid (HA) was not adequate, the use of FM transmitter and recording during lectures were not really helpful either. My survival in the first 3 years in medical school was largely contributed by helpful and understanding lecturers, friends and the supportive university environment, besides my own intellectual capacity and motivation for success. My shortcoming has pushed me to my limits when I entered my clinical years. Being a non-native English speaker, noisy hospital environment and the fact that nolecture notes provided during clinical posting had really stressed me out and affected my self-esteem.
Fortunately, at the most difficult time, my application for the National Cochlear Implant Programme under Ministry of Health was approved. It entitled me to get full sponsorship for the CI. Hence, on the 4th December 2008, I was successfully operated by a dedicated CI team and became the first patient who had undergone such an operation in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. At the moment, I am still on rehabilitation that needs me to see speech therapist and audiologist on weekly basis. I have made a big decision when I decided to undergo the operation. I too, extended my studies for a year for this purpose. But I have no regret. I am determined to use CI for the benefit of my studies and profession as a whole.
Living in a supportive and caring family of Mohamad Isa Sabar and Umi Kalsom Ismail has been my strength all this while. I can see the good side that my mother is also suffering from hearing loss. I have someone who not only can understand my problems, but also guide and advise me since she is experiencing the same thing. I realize that my experience has reinforced my passion of medical profession. It is also a quality that will help me excel in this field. I did not let my disabilities stop me from contributing in every way I could. My constant involvement in school and university activities has enabled me to establish good rapport with people, build my leadership quality, maturity, and sense of responsibility that are important to succeed in the medical world.
Eventhough I am still very new to CI, I know that it is going to make significant changes my life. The fact that my hearing ability has now increased to nearly normal proves that there is light at the end of every tunnel. Now, I can get the most of my life because I can have phone conversation again, I can enjoy music and TV programs without depending on subtitle and even better hearing of heart sound through the CI. The good quality and pleasant sounds that CI provides me no longer exhaust or disappoint me, thus increase my self-esteem and confident to become a successful doctor. I am glad that my family is very happy with my progress and other people enjoy having conversation with me.
My disability requires me to invest a large sum of money to buy specially designed medical tools and teaching aids, other than the maintenance cost of CI itself. Recently, I bought an electronic stethoscope which is compatible to CI but is much more expensive than other ordinary stethoscopes. If I get this scholarship, I will use the money to get other CI products that are necessary to help me to get the most of my studies. It would also be a good platform for me to inspire and share my experience with other hard-ofÂ-hearing people around the world because I love and proud to share my new found CI hearing which I actually find strength in. While the scholarship could be an important source of finance, it would also be a motivating factor to encourage me to constantly excel in my studies.
Upon my graduation in 2011, I am eager to devote myself in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) department. I believe that I am obligated to use my experience in a constructive manner, in a manner that benefits the society. I want to play an active role educating the public particularly about CI and serving the needy. I hope to expand my experience and knowledge as much as I could while studying overseas because I am optimistic that I will have the ability and will power to make important contributions when I return and serve my country.
When I decided to realize my dream of becoming a doctor, I was hoping that modern medical technology will help me in some ways later. I have been waiting for a miracle that will return my hearing to normal and I am grateful I have found it with Cl. I believe I will be able to help others like me and might even contribute to the development of CI and related hearing diseases in the future, if God persists. It is a dream but nothing is impossible if I put my mind into it. Therefore, I have full confidence in myself as a worthy candidate for your scholarship.
Sorry panjang sgt lak artikel ni..Ok,thanks n wasalam..
